Where to Drink

Distilleries in Los Angeles open for Visitors

Here are a few distilleries in Los Angeles that have opened their doors to visitors for coming in and having a glass or two of their excellent spirits and having a fun time out.

Just like the breweries, the distilleries in Los Angeles have had a tremendous impact on the growth of the LA drinking scene over the years. There have been a number of distilleries and spirits manufacturers over the years that have shaped the way the people of Los Angeles drink and in a certain way have influenced their tastes and decisions. Sure, there are internationally recognized brands that do their thing but in the local brands there is a sense of belongingness that binds the city together. One always wants to see people from the city progress and the city progress, and the distilleries in LA are exactly that.

In a year of uncertainty and what felt like an impending doom was awaiting us, the world has bounced back gradually, with precaution and care. The last eight months have felt like everything has come to a standstill but now it is all on the verge of coming back to normal (it isn’t all back to normal, so we still have a fight in front of us). As we bring back normalcy to the world, the distilleries deserve to be a part of that. With that being said, here are a few distilleries in Los Angeles that have opened their doors to visitors for coming in and having a glass or two of their excellent spirits and having a fun time out.

Greenbar Distillery: If you are a Los Angeles local and a spirits enthusiast, chances are you have come across a spirit from Greenbar distillery. If not, there is always a first time. Founded in 2004 by Litty Mathew and Melkon Khosrovian, Greenbar is LA’s first distillery since Prohibition which meant that its start was already steeped in history. Over the years, along with the people and the journey, the spirits list has also grown tremendously. They believe in chasing flavor and are drawn towards creating a portfolio of organic spirits, one they have become world leaders in. When it comes to visiting the distillery, Greenbar has multiple options like spirits tasting, and distillery tour, so you are in a fix as to what to select. When it comes to their spirits however, they believe in doing the classics differently, by bringing in new flavours to the classics, gins and liqueurs that add to a cocktail’s charm and not get lost. A true great LA born and bred distillery for anyone looking to have some fun and learn more about a historic distillery.

Mulholland Distilling: There’s Mulholland, and then there’s a drive to get there (not more than a film reference). One of the classiest distilleries in LA, that is not the only art reference when it comes to Mulholland Distilling, as it was founded by actor Waltor Goggins and cinematographer friend Matthew Alper. The drive at Mulholland Distilling is to create artisanal spirits that imbibe the spirit and vibrancy of the great city of Los Angeles in it. The whiskey, the gin and the vodka are all drawn towards the sweeter side with their vodka being gluten free. Working in tandem with master distillers, mixologists and blenders, the spirits from Mulholland Distilling can be enjoyed by any spirits enthusiast all through the year. With a distillery in place, there are plans to get a tasting room and an events space to increase viability and bring the vibrancy of LA on a bigger platform.

Our/Los Angeles: Located in the heart of the LA Art District, Our/Los Angeles is a distillery special for more than one reason. From having a botanical aroma, to bringing a subtle and sweet floral note to the palette, the vodka from Our/Los Angeles is one that will make the residents of the city proud. Hand crafted to precise specifications, the vodka and the distillery are open for all to enjoy. Get your friends, book tasting and visiting tours and you can have a sip (you will ask for more) of some of the finest vodka to hail from the city of Los Angeles. The architecture at the distillery has a great feel and makes you feel right at home as you enjoy your downtime with a glass of vodka right in your hand.

R6 Distillery: The first ever distillery to bring a Los Angeles bourbon to fruition, R6 Distillery has helped change the definition of where bourbon comes from in the USA. A family owned distillery, R6 Distillery resides in El Segundo, California just two miles away from the LA airport. An idea that found its way to founder and head distiller Rob Rubens, R6 Distillery was found on the back of his love for distilling, something he found was always in him during an unplanned visit to New Orleans. A dream that has now become a reality, R6 Distillery now produces 12 craft spirits that you can enjoy during your visit to the distillery’s tasting room, or during a tour of the distillery. Plan ahead of your visit so that you can enjoy events, shows and of course some exquisite spirits at one of LA’s  premier distilleries. Stark Spirits: Co-owned by Greg and Karen Robinson Stark, Stark Spirits specializes in creating hand-crafted small batch spirits in the Business Park of Pasadena. It was Greg Stark’s passion and drive of creating an exceptional single malt whiskey that gave birth to this quaint distillery and both Greg and the distillery haven’t looked back since. When it comes to having a tour of the distillery, there is a need to fill out a form and then representatives of the distillery will have a chat with you and finalize the details. The products of Stark Spirits are present at other places as well, but the best place to enjoy them is right at the place they are crafted.
