Clean, Green, Award-Winning Gins

Mycroft, a Scottish distillery that is making heads turn with all their gins coming up top.

If you were to be given a blind tasting of any of the gins produced by Mycroft Gin distillery, you would probably think that it has been a recipe handed down by generations. The reality however couldn’t be further from that. Established only in 2019, Mycroft Gin has quickly established itself as a name to be recognized within the gin and spirits industry. The distillery was among the biggest winners at the 2020 USA Spirits Ratings as all three of their gins scored highly from the judges based on their quality, packaging, and value.

The team at Mycroft is all about using the local resources at their disposal for making their gin. The spring water is locally sourced, and along with it comes an inventive use of ingredients that makes their gin such an inviting prospect to drink. While producing their gin, the folks over at Mycroft also believe in helping the environment in all possible manners, with their distillation process in Scotland taking place using 95% green energy. The highland water comes from a few miles away from the distillery, and from Scotland comes a gin that audiences have already come to love.

At the 2020 USA Spirits Ratings, all three of Mycroft’s gins were among the winners. All three of them scored highly from the judges with two of them winning gold medals and one just missing out on it and settling on a silver. The criteria for judging included three main factors, being quality, value, and packaging with the total score being 100 points. For Mycroft Gin, all three of their gins scored highly in all three criteria. Here is how they fared individually and what you can expect from them individually when you get round to having them.

Emporium 1: The Emporium 1 scored 92 points and won a gold medal at the 2020 USA Spirits Ratings. It is inspired by tropical getaways and contains eleven quality botanicals, including the likes of juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica roots, lemon peels, almonds to name a few, and also includes nuts. At the nose, the Emporium 1 is very enticing, floral, and tropical with the flavors of orange peel and hibiscus dominating. The palate is very smooth and there is a real sweet edge to the gin but that gets balanced perfectly with the juniper seeds and spices of cassia quills. If you add a tonic to the Emporium 1, you have yourselves a great sundowner drink.

Emporium 2: Inspired by the rose-scented days and containing eight quality botanicals, the Emporium 2 was also awarded a gold medal at the 2020 USA Spirits Ratings as it scored 91 points overall. Along with juniper berries, coriander seeds, and angelica root, Emporium 2 also contains orange peels, almonds, star anise, rosehip, and hemp. At the nose, the Emporium 2 has a hint of spice from the orient while the palate is very smooth and floral with spicy star anise which gives this gin a sweet and spicy edge that gets balanced out by the juniper seeds. Notes of juniper, coriander, and orange peel come through very quickly and it makes Emporium 2 a quaff gin to have.

Emporium 3: With an overall score of 88 points from the judges, this honey bees, Scottish highlands, and summer meadows inspired gin was awarded a silver medal at the 2020 USA Spirits Ratings. Containing botanicals such as nutmeg, lavender, cubeb, mint, royal Deeside honey, and lemon peel along with Mycroft staples juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, and almonds, the Emporium 3 gives away notes of floral lavender, sweet honey, and a hint of mint at the nose. The palate is full of smooth juniper and creamy almonds with the royal Deeside honey complementing the balance with lavender. Its refreshing finish comes from the cubeb, juniper, and mint and that makes Emporium 3 a great sipping gin.

All the three gins from Mycroft Gin contain nuts.

The distillery plans to enter the US markets in 2021 and is looking forward to having discussions with retailers and restaurants. They have a great distributor network in the UK, with their products available on Amazon, Shopify, The Gin to my Tonic store, and Master of Malt along with bars and restaurants and in Lost Loch Spirits retail store. To not miss out on any of their updates, make sure you follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

An emerging distillery that has put its best foot forward in just two years of operations, Mycroft Gin and its three Emporiums belong on the shelves of retailers and restaurants all over the world.
